Wicked Fox is a modern urban fantasy set in the city of Seoul, Korea. It is inspired by Korean mythology and features magical and mythical creatures including the main character Gu Miyoung, who is a Gumiho (nine-tailed fox) that needs to feed on the souls of bad men to survive. On the night of a full moon, Miyoung meets Ahn Jihoon after she has killed a man in the forest. After Jihoon finds the body, he and Miyoung are both attacked by a dokkaebi (goblin). During the fight, Miyoung looses her precious fox bead, which gives someone the power to control her if they possess it. Terrified of telling her over-bearing mother what has happened, she keeps it a secret from her and attempts to fix it herself, enlisting the help of her friend Nara, who is a shaman. In the meantime, Miyoung is enrolled in school by her mother, where she reunites with Jihoon. He knows who and what she really is as his grandmother used to tell him stories of the gumiho. He knows of their power and the danger they pose to humans, but he’s drawn to her anyway. As the two grow closer, feelings begin to develop between them, somewhat reluctantly with Miyoung, and Jihoon agrees to help her. After many failed attempts to restore her fox bead, she all but gives up and refuses to feed again, not even after the death of her mother. Miyoung experiences heartbreak, betrayal and lies from the people she thought she could trust, and it forces her to choose between her immortal life and Jihoon’s.
My thoughts:
I really enjoyed Wicked Fox overall. Itโs a creative, romantic, easy-to-read story with tons of magic, mystical creatures and folklore. The story and the characters are very well written, and I really enjoyed it. Miyoung and Jihoon have a lot in common such as their need for privacy and how they both donโt know their fathers. The world is so vibrant, and Kat did a wonderful job with this story. That cliffhanger!! I love them and I hate them haha ๐ It’s the worst having to wait a whole year but I’m really excited to find out!
What I liked:
> Miyoung is so badass and she doesnโt tolerate anybody messing with her. She changes so much during the course of the story. In the beginning, she is a cold-hearted killer with no friends and barely any emotion. By the end of the book, she becomes this caring, loving person who would do anything to protect her friends, even if she has to sacrifice her own life.
> Jihoon is such a sweet talker Iโm surprised Miyoung could keep a straight face when talking to him. His grandmother was having none of it, but she did break a couple times.
What I didnโt like:
> There was a lot of teenage melodrama that wasnโt for me.
> A lot of the book was packed with filler chapters that didnโt hold my attention and I just found myself bored by them.
> The final fight near the end of the book seemed a little rushed. There was a lot of build up for it to be slightly disappointing.
Wicked Fox is the first book in a planned duology. The second book is expected to be released sometime in 2020. I’m excited to find out where the series is going, especially after that cliffhanger haha ๐ Hope you all enjoyed my review! Let me know what you all thought of Wicked Fox ๐ Bye guys, happy reading! xx
